Back-to-school season is in full swing. The Jersey City Public Schools’ school year starts Sept. 10. Some Jersey City charter schools will be back in session next week, while others have already kicked off the 2026-2027 school year.  For Jersey City families in need of free backpacks, noteboo ks, crayons and more this year, there are a plethora of school supply giveaway events on the calendar in the coming days. The Jersey City Times has compiled the following non-exhaustive list: Saturday Ward D Backpack Giveaway Who: The office of Ward D Councilman Jake Ephros and the Laborers’ International Union of North America Eastern Region When: 10 a.m. Where: Jake for JC Community Center, 257 Central Ave. Need to Know: Parents and guardians are asked to pre-register for the giveaway here. School Supply Drive Who: Jersey City influencer and news commentator 7 Alkaline When: 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Where: Bayside Park, Garfield Avenue and Bayside Park Drive Need to Know: Fifty bags of school supplies will be distributed, with a limit of one bag per family. Families must RSVP here in order to receive supplies. Backpack Drive Who: Legacy Networking Group When: 12-4 p.m. Where: 665 Ocean Ave. Need to Know: This event’s organizers will accept donations of backpacks, notebooks, pens, pencils, folders, crayons, markers, sanitary items and other school supplies. Sunday Driven to Give Back-to-School Community Giveback and Car Show Who: Tiger’s Touches, Lifestyle International Realty, Salumeria Ercolano and other local businesses When: 12-5 p.m. Where: Salumeria Ercolano, 322 West Side Ave. Need to Know: This event will feature a car show, vendors, live entertainment, free haircuts, and a giveaway of about 1,000 backpacks. Donations of backpacks and other school supplies are welcomed. Hamm Chaz Backpack Drive Who: The Hamm Chaz Cannabis Dispensary When: 3 p.m. Where: Hamm Chaz, 747 West Side Ave. Need to Know: The first 40 children to attend the backpack drive will receive extra school supplies. Thursday Tom+Henry Back-to-School Drive Who: Tom+Henry Barbershop When: 12-4 p.m. Where: Tom+Henry Barbershop, 590 Palisade Ave. Need to Know: The barbershop will distribute free backpacks and school supplies and give free haircuts to school-aged children on a first come, first served basis.  Friday Back-to-School Barbecue Who: Twin Rivers Recovery and the Jersey City Police Officers Benevolent Association When: 12-4 p.m. Where: Twin Rivers Recovery Jersey City, 110 Martin Luther King Drive Need to Know: This event will feature free food, a DJ, bounce houses and other kid-friendly activities, and a backpack giveaway. More than 200 backpacks will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. Sept. 6 Second Annual Jersey City Back-to-School Giveback Who: Biscott Styles Barbershop When: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Where: Biscott Styles Barbershop, 381 Summit Ave. Need to Know: The barbershop will distribute free school supplies, while supplies last, and provide free haircuts and hair braiding services. Registration is required for haircuts and hair braiding, with appointments scheduled in 30-minute time slots. Interested parents can reserve an appointment here.  Sixth Annual Back to School Giveaway Who: Team Kory Edwards, Inc. When: 3 p.m. Where: Berry Lane Park, 1000 Garfield Ave. Need to Know: This event will feature house music from DJ Flamez, men’s women’s and youth basketball games, dunking and shooting contests, face painting and more. Free backpacks and school supplies will also be distributed. Ahead of the event, Team Kory Edwards is accepting donations via Cash App at $TeamKoryEdwardsINC. Sept. 8 Back to School Bash Who: Community 1st, Athletes Making Progress Together, and other local nonprofit organizations and small businesses When: 5-8 p.m. Where: Pershing Field Park, 201 Central Ave. Need to Know: This event is open to students ages 5-12. It will feature music from DJ Macho, performances by magician Josh Pele, bounce houses, face painting, and a giveaway of backpacks and school supplies. Local politicians including Mayor James Solomon, Ward C Councilman Tom Zuppa and State Sen. Raj Mukherji will be present. School supply recipients must preregister here and be Jersey City residents.
