Pokémon fans from around the world are descending on San Francisco this weekend for the Pokémon World Championships and the franchise’s first-ever fan convention. The three-day celebration is centered around Moscone Center, where thousands of fans and competitors are expected to gather. Or ganizers are transforming the area around the convention center into the world of Pokémon, complete with Bay Area landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge and Painted Ladies. Even Howard Street between Third and Fourth streets is getting a Pokémon makeover, becoming “Rayquaza Road” for the weekend. While the Pokémon World Championships are held annually, this year’s event includes a major first: Pokémon XP, an inaugural fan convention opening Friday morning. About 50,000 people are expected to attend the festivities, with roughly 2,500 players competing in the world championships.
