A wildfire in the Dallas County city of Wilmer burned about 65 acres before more than a dozen agencies from around the county got it under control. The Wilmer Fire Dept. said there were no injuries reported, and they still have not determined the cause. The fire burned near the Patrick Baptist Church in Ferris on Parkinson Rd. Pastor Tyler Poole provided video from near the fire. Dallas Fire-Rescue, Dallas County Fire and Sheriffs, Hutchins, Bristol, Combine, Ferris, Red Oak, Ennis, Palmer, Seagoville, and Crandall all assisted in the operation. Poole was incredibly grateful. “They are some of the bravest first responders we have. And so yeah, having the Bristol and the Ferris and the Red Oak and the Dallas and all these people come by to help out, it’s so cool. I’ve always known firefighters is an awesome metaphor. While they’re beating back the fires of this earth, we on the spiritual side of things get to beat back the fires of hell a little bit. And so I’m so grateful for them and for them putting their lives on the line. And I can’t thank them enough,” Poole said. “It was a little bit after 4:30 (p.m.). Me and the family and some church members were here in the building, and somebody calls and says, hey, I saw a fire a little bit down the road. And so we go outside, and we turn up, we see this big fire about 200 yards away, and we just knew that wind blowing; it was going to come our direction. So we started getting everybody off the property, put valuables inside the building as best as we can, get the animals off,” Poole said. “I stayed until, you know, in the parking lot until the point where the fires got all the way up to the fence line. And at that point, the smoke was everywhere. The firefighters there, I’m like, it’s my time to leave, get out of their way. And I told myself, it’s in the hands of God what happens to the property at this point. And so then I left. And then from that point forward where we were kind of in the dark. And so we saw this aerial photo of the entire thing, and ablaze, except for our property.” Firefighters arrived before they could even call. Pastor Poole, his family and approx. 10 others were safely evacuated along with their church cat, Mango. “My wife said, ‘You better make sure to get mango.’ And I said, ‘I don’t even know where he’s at.’ And I go over, and he’s just hanging out on the front porch,” Poole said. “Like everything’s fine. He doesn’t even care. And he had to get his first car ride today. So, Mango’s all good.” “We were just praying because, you know, there’s wildfire all over, all over Texas. So we were praying, God, could you please spare our property? But if you don’t, please help us to use this for good in the end. Right? And so when we saw the aerial footage of the church untouched, even our little house behind it was untouched. We’re so thankful. And we definitely view it as a grace and a mercy of God. But we also know there are lots of people who have had their homes devastated, who’ve had their lives upended. And so while we view this as a mercy for us, it’s not a mercy for us to gloat in. It’s a mercy for us to say, hey, God showed us some mercy. Let’s take this opportunity to go and show mercy to other people who need help right now. And so that was kind of our response,” Poole said. “I’ve never been near a wildfire before,” Poole said. “I’m at the mercy of this thing that I can’t fight. And that somebody else has got to come in and do the job. And so it was a sense of fear, but not a fear. And like, I didn’t know what I was going to do with the rest of my life, but a fear in, I just want to make sure those around me are safe, because, you know, while objects and buildings can be replaced, people can’t.” Dallas County Sheriff’s provided the photos below.
