CARMEL, Ind. (WRTV) -- Carmel city leaders hosted a Rally for Relief Thursday, where community members could drive into Lucas Estate and donate items to area flood victims.Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam said the recent floods left peop le's homes needing extra help."We've got 62 people with major damage to their home that can't live there full-time," she said. "So we're making sure that they have what they need when they come back and start to rebuild their home."During the drive-through donation event, community members could drop off non-perishable food, household items or monetary donations to support flood victims."Thankfully, I was not affected by it," said donor Margaret Baranowski. "But my heart goes out to those that were impacted. And this is a way for us to contribute and just demonstrate how much we care and support our community."Nick Countryman said it is "heartbreaking to see those people in our own community that are going through something.""You usually see things on TV or somewhere else, but seeing the floods here locally," he continued. "When I saw the call for some help, (it's a) small thing we could do to contribute to people who are hurting."Pamela Bollier said she lives close to where the flooding hit Carmel."We are less than a mile from the river," she said. "We're just blessed that it did not affect us, and we want to help those that need it."All the food donations from Thursday's event will be given to the Hamilton County Harvest Food Bank for distribution."Oh my gosh, this is just exciting," said Suzanna Hobson, Executive Director of the Hamilton County Harvest Food Bank. "When Mayor Finkam reached out to me last week, and suggested this and we were like 'can we make this happen?' Of course, we were going to make this happen."Hobson said she was "just grateful for all the donations and all the support that our community has had to support anyone and everyone that had got affected by the flood.""Carmel, they take care of their own," added Countryman.
