NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (WRTV) Hamilton County commissioners extended a local disaster emergency for another week Thursday to assist with ongoing flood recovery.Flooding caused the White River at Noblesvilles Logan Street Bridge to c rest at a record high of 24.6 feet at 3 a.m. Aug. 15. The river flooding also caused a creek to reverse course in Carmel, leading to a bridge collapse and the redirection of nearly 9 billion gallons of water into a sand and gravel quarry.The disaster declaration will remain in place through Sept. 3.While the emergency continues, officials ended a ban on recreational travel for the White River. The travel ban began Aug. 18 due to dangerous flooding, debris, and contamination. Recent water tests by the Hamilton County Health Department show the river has returned to levels seen before the flood. Additionally, crews corrected the river's path so it no longer flows into the Martin Marietta quarry.Also, the county said in a Thursday afternoon news release, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management determined the river is safe to travel, while the Indiana Department of Natural Resources found no immediate threats to the public.President Christine Altman of the Hamilton County Board of Commissioners said in the release that while testing justifies reopening the river, residents should still use caution because of hidden debris. She also noted the disaster declaration remains necessary because many neighborhoods are still dealing with heavy damage.Keeping the disaster emergency in place allows the Hamilton County Emergency Management department to continue coordinating recovery efforts and seeking money from state and federal agencies.
