District Attorney Larry Krasner said the man identified as the shooter in the death of an off-duty Philadelphia police officer “does not dispute” firing the gun, but prosecutors are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. During a news conference Thursday, Krasner shar ed new developments in the investigation into the shooting that killed off-duty officer Alhassane Barry in Southwest Philadelphia on Aug. 16, 2026. According to Krasner, prosecutors believe the shooter was properly identified and has provided authorities with “his version” of what occurred that night. However, the district attorney said some of the details provided by the man require “additional investigation.” “The shooter does not dispute that he had the gun, which he provided through his counsel. He does not dispute that he fired the gun. He has described, and I will not get into specifics, his version of what happened at that time,” Krasner said. Press play above to watch the full news conference. Thursday’s news conference came just over a week after Philadelphia police said they had identified the shooting suspect. However, as of Aug. 27, police have not released the suspect’s name because charges have not been filed. Barry, 29, was killed in a shooting that happened just before 4 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2026, at an after-hours lounge near the intersection of 73rd Street and Elmwood Avenue. In that incident, officials said Barry was one of two men shot multiple times. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died. A 35-year-old man was also shot multiple times and was treated at a nearby hospital. During Thursday’s news conference, Krasner vowed to shut down the after-hours lounge where the shooting occurred, and said that Barry’s death may not be the “only fatality associated with this speakeasy.” According to Krasner, a young woman was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver near the establishment weeks earlier. He said he believes she was planning to go to the after-hours lounge. “The street itself, to the best of my knowledge, only had one open business, and that would be this illegal business. So, there is reason to infer she was crossing to go to this place when she was struck by a hit-and-run driver,” Krasner said. Surveillance video obtained by NBC10 showed a marked Philadelphia police vehicle driving near the area around 3:30 a.m. on Aug. 16. Roughly 10 seconds later, someone is seen leaving the after-hours lounge before a fight breaks out. Shots are then fired, and people are seen running from the area. It was unclear whose gun investigators recovered. Krasner explained that there are multiple videos connected to the case and that investigators are still working to review and investigate all the available evidence. He said they expect to “know a lot more within two months.” “We may or may not have a conclusion within two months, but we will certainly know a lot more and be in a better position to inform the family and be in a better position to ask questions publicly without jeopardizing an ongoing investigation,” Krasner said.
