The atomic structure of aluminum, like that of other metals, allows repeated recycling without degradation or loss of inherent properties, though practical limits and contamination can restrict closed-loop reuse.  All materials lose volume when recycled; once at a recycling facility, aluminum recycling has a metal recovery rate of 98%. However, gaps in the recycling chain before aluminum ever reaches a furnace reduce the recycling rate; globally, the rate for aluminum cans is 75%, and 43% in the United States. An estimated 75% of the primary aluminum ever produced is still in use today.  Available data shows recycling uses up to 95% less energy than primary aluminum production, with a similar reduction in carbon emissions.
