The father of a 6-year-old girl and her 11-year-old brother who were killed Wednesday morning after a massive fire tore through their family’s row home in Trenton spoke exclusively with NBC10 on his grief. Disleiny Nicole Santana, 6, and Rolando Santana, 11, were killed in the fire at the home on Hewitt Street. Their father, Delvys Santana, struggled to speak through his grief Wednesday. “I am devastated. My family is sad. These are my children,” Santana said. Santana, a native of the Dominican Republic, said he was inside the home with his wife and six children when the fire broke out around 4 a.m. Santana said he tried to get everyone out of the burning home. According to Santana, two of his children jumped from a window. His youngest daughter and 11-year-old son were rushed to the hospital but died. Officials said the two children were found inside the home during a search. The fire destroyed the property, leaving charred windows and a collapsed interior. Santana said his family had only moved into the home on Monday. He said he is leaving the loss of his two children in God’s hands. Santana also said the smoke detectors inside the home were not working and believes that could have made a difference. Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora called the deaths a tragedy and stressed the importance of working smoke detectors. “It’s a real tragedy and our prayers are with the family. I can’t emphasize enough the value of making sure that smoke detectors are in working order and houses, especially when you’re a tenant,” Gusciora said.
