Thomas Mina made some tea in his new luxury downtown digs Wednesday, then headed to the train station down the street to visit family. It was week three sharing an apartment with two other people in the latest upscale apartment building to open downtown, the 96-unit Estelle, atop the grave of the former Harold’s bridal shop on Elm Street near the corner of State. Rents range from $2,396 for a one-bedroom to $4,808 for a four-bedroom. The swanky spot was already more than half-leased at the time of its ribbon-cutting last week. As usual, that prompted a question often heard during New Haven’s market-rate central-city apartment boom: Who are the human beings moving into all these places? In Mina’s case, it was a 23-year-old man working to get back on his feet. The Long Island native said that “drug and alcohol recovery” brought him to New Haven last March. He works “in fashion,” he said. He had been living in another apartment complex in town when the Estelle opened. He called the new home “a needed upgrade.” “I love it here so far,” he said Wednesday as he prepared to set off for the train. “The location is prime. I can walk everywhere here.” He lauded the “amenities,” including the rooftop terrace and gym. A basketball court-yoga studio and first-floor Yemeni coffee shop are set to open soon. “A lot of Yalies” live in the Estelle, he observed, but overall it’s a “very diverse group of people” — “which is super cool.
