A San Jose police sergeant who was shot by an armed robbery suspect suffered critical injuries but has since been stabilized, police said Wednesday. The confrontation unfolded Tuesday after officers spotted a suspect wanted in connection with two armed robberies reported over the weekend, accordi ng to the San Jose Police Department. When officers approached the suspect, police said he pulled out a firearm and drove away, hitting at least one other vehicle along the way. The suspect abandoned the vehicle near Lick Avenue and Goodyear Street and continued fleeing on foot, police said. He eventually reached the area of Almaden Avenue and Floyd Street, where police said he ran to a nearby home occupied by a young family and forced his way inside to hide. Two officers followed the suspect into the home, where the suspect opened fire and struck a police sergeant, according to SJPD. The suspect was also shot and died at the scene. Brett Bynaster, whose children and grandchildren were inside the home, said they hid in a closet before officers arrived and got them out safely. “Officers busted the door down,” Bynaster said, praising their bravery. “They rushed everyone out and we’re incredibly grateful.” Police said the suspect was wanted in connection with two armed robberies over the weekend in which he allegedly threatened two people with a weapon described as a long gun. Detectives are continuing to investigate the shooting, and police said additional details are expected to be released Wednesday afternoon.
