CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The public will soon get more information about the investigation into Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Dr. Crystal Hill. The Board of Education voted to release a report that will give more insight into what came out of this investigation. The Board put Dr. Crysta l Hill on paid leave in June for what they say were concerns about administrative and operational oversight. They hired a law firm to conduct an independent investigation that cost 275 dollars an hour. “I think that the information that the investigation has yielded will help us be better working with Dr. Hill, sharing that information her woman and her better lead our district,” Board Member Cynthia Stone said. The board brought her back in august and refused to give any details hiding behind employment privacy laws. Board Member Charlitta Hatch introduced a motion that would make a report to include the process of the investigation, the key lessons learned and the recommended improvements to governance, policies and procedures. “Confidentiality does not have to mean silence. There is a space between releasing everything and saying nothing, and North Carolina law actually provides a process for navigating that space. I am not asking us to work around the law, I’m asking us to use the process the law gives us,” Hatch said. Dr. Hill watched and listened as the board discussed whether to release the report. In a back to school event, Dr. Hill said she would address the investigation at a later date. Inchara Gopinath is the student advisor. She doesn’t have a vote, but used her voice to share her thoughts about the perception in the district. “As somebody who I guess experiences both the public stance on this or perspective, it’s important to take the time and discuss releasing this to the public because I want people to know,” Advisor Gopinath said. Board chair Stephanie Sneed and Board members Lenora Shipp and Monty Witherspoon abstained from voting. “We should have already made a statement to the public, and so for me to stay here at this moment, for me, that is a this is a performative action for me,” Board Member Witherspoon said. The rest of the board members voted in favor of releasing the report. It will be ready by the end of September. WCCB requested the final cost of the investigation and were still waiting on that number. We are told that will be included in the report. ...read more read less
