BATON ROUGE -- Former players, family, and friends gathering in the Pete Maravich Center to celebrate the life of LSU Tigers baseball coach and athletic director -- Skip Bertman.Many people, from current coaches and athletic directors to former players to Bertman's family, all spoke on Bertman's li fe and legacy.If you ask LSU baseball players who they think the best team Skip Bertman has ever had, they'll tell you it's his family."I remember as a young man just seeing his relationship with Miss Sandy and his daughters, and I mean that was his number one team ultimately," Mike Koerner, a member of the 1997 National Championship team, said.When fans look around LSU's campus, they told WBRZ that they think of Skip."The things we see with all the renovations to the stadiums, the additions, a new baseball stadium, a new softball stadium, that all start with him," LSU fan Cory Morace said.Arguably the greatest college baseball coach of all time, Bertman's five national titles speak for themselves, but it's what he meant to the players and coaches before and after the game that they'll remember."Maybe not even just the greatest baseball coach of my lifetime, but the greatest man I know and surprisingly the greatest friend I never knew I would have," LSU Baseball Head Coach Jay Johnson said.Former Golden Spikes winner Ben McDonald talked about the last conversation he had with his coach and friend."I told him I loved him for all of us. And I kissed him on the forehead, and I made my way out. Little did I know that was going to be the last time I would see Coach Bertman," McDonald said.A coach, a father, a husband, and a legend."For all the attention paid to what our dad accomplished, his real gift was what he could see in other people." A coach and mentor and all-around beautiful human being," Bertman's Daughter Lori Bertman said.To end the celebration of life, everyone in attendance got together and sang Sweet Caroline, a tradition LSU fans have gotten pretty used to singing in Omaha because of Skip.Watch below:Permalink| Comments ...read more read less
