SpaceX’s spaceport will be built in a remote coastal marshland known as Pecan Island in Vermilion Parish, where the company will launch its rockets. The Pecan Island site is about 45 miles south of Lafayette — about 130,000 acres. The deal has been rumored to be in the works for months after the Louisiana Legislature passed a host of bills designed to attract an aerospace project during the spring session at Landry’s request. Republican state Rep. Jack McFarland, who authored two of the bills, confirmed that he will be among those attending the event Tuesday. McFarland said while he has a general knowledge of the SpaceX project, he hasn’t been briefed on specifics. “It’s an exciting project for Louisiana,” McFarland said in an interview with USA Today Network. “This puts Louisiana at the forefront of the future; it gives us a leg up in a high tech industry that will continue to expand.” Other lawmakers who spoke to USA Today Network but declined to be identified said they haven’t been briefed on specifics, but they believe the project will result in a construction boom and 3,000 or more permanent jobs. SpaceX’s Boca Chica, Texas, spaceport employees about 3,400 workers. The company hasn’t commented on the project, but earlier this spring SpaceX addressed the Louisiana rumor in a social media post. “It’s no secret that we intend to launch Starship a lot, targeting thousands of flights per year,” the company said in a May 4 post on X. “That cadence will require the ability to launch from many different locations, so we are constantly exploring to find viable sites to expand Starship operations in the future, both domestically and internationally.” Greg Hilburn covers state politics for the USA TODAY Network of Louisiana.
