The scholarships were made possible by a donation from the Drew Gross Forever Foundation. “Drew Gross had his nephew in my baseball program and always worked on volunteer basis as a coach and helping out any way he could. He was a great guy,” says Berry. “When he passed away at age 51 from colorectal cancer, it was a huge loss for everyone who knew and loved him.” Drew’s family and friends formed the Drew Gross Forever Foundation to educate the public about colorectal cancer and raise money for children to participate in sports, something close to Drew’s heart, according to Berry. Drew grew up in Miami and was the youngest of four siblings. He was an extraordinary friend, teammate, godfather, uncle and, to some lucky kids, coach. He was diagnosed with Stage 4 colorectal cancer in 2022 and died later that year. According to its website, the Drew Gross Forever Foundation’s mission is to help ensure that more people have the knowledge and resources they need to get screened for cancer early. Treatment is most effective when caught in the early stages. Screening should start at age 45 but people with certain risk factors may need to begin before then. The Drew Gross Forever Foundation hosts an annual golf tournament to raise funds and generate awareness. The next tournament will be held on December 7 at The Club at Weston Hills. Danny Berry’s Baseball Academy runs this year from August 17 to December 12 at Continental Park located at 10000 SW 82nd Avenue in Kendall. Players age 3-8 years old are welcome and the league is the ideal setting for a child’s introduction to the national pastime of baseball. Each week, professional coaches teach throwing, catching, fielding, base running and batting. The academy also offers clinics and camps throughout the year.
