FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) — Fort Wayne City Councilman Geoff Paddock is asking the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to apply strict environmental standards as it considers another wetlands permit for the Google data center. According to WANE 15, Paddock sent a letter to IDEM ahead of a public hearing Tuesday, August 25. He says he cannot attend the hearing in person. Google data center developer Hatchworks LLC is seeking permission to fill 2.13 acres of protected forested wetlands as part of an expansion of the campus along Adams Center Road. Paddock says residents have contacted him with concerns about the continued expansion of the data center and requests for additional land and diesel generators. Since construction began in 2024, Hatchworks has submitted four applications to IDEM for additional generators or land. Previous requests for additional generators and nearly two and a half acres of wetlands have been approved. Paddock says the environmental and wetlands impacts were not presented to the City Council when the property was rezoned in 2023. He is asking IDEM to require Google and Hatchworks to stay within what he calls “stated environmental parameters” and to avoid further impacts to protected wetlands. The IDEM public hearing on the latest wetlands request is scheduled for Tuesday and will be held virtually through Microsoft Teams.
