LEXINGTON, Ky. — The newest cohort of the Leadership Lexington program has begun its journey with an orientation retreat aimed at fostering connections among aspiring community leaders. The 2026-27 class of 52 participants kicked off their participation with team-building activities and introduct ions at an August orientation retreat at Boone Tavern, where they explored leadership assessments and selected group projects to pursue throughout the year. The 11-month program represents the 48th cohort of what has become a longstanding tradition since 1979 that has produced more than 1,900 graduates who have shaped Lexington’s development in areas including youth mentoring, public art, healthy living and hunger relief. From September through June, participants will meet once a month in different locations around the area to hear from knowledgeable speakers and panels, take tours, and participate in group activities covering topics such as government, education, public safety, economic development, arts, equine, diversity, health and human services, and leadership development. Admission to the competitive program remains selective. Participants must be employed in the Greater Lexington area and work for or represent a Commerce Lexington member organization. The program costs $3,500, and participants must attend 80 percent of monthly day sessions to graduate. According to the program organizers, the group of applicants this year demonstrated outstanding passion, talent and commitment, and the selected cohort reflects the cultural diversity of the city.
