We didn’t see many close contests in the first week of high school football season, but North Central and Gettysburg had an early submission for ‘Game of the Year’ Friday night. The Battlers gripped tightly onto a 22-20, last second victory to move to 1-0 on the season that essentially came do wn to a failed two-point conversion. North Central held control of the ballgame throughout the first two quarters, taking the early 6-0 in the first quarter when the Wherry connection saw a 20-yard scoring pass from Kobe to Jared. Gettysburg would answer back in the second quarter with a successful drive that was capped off by a Boston Brown 1-yard touchdown run. With a converted two-point play, the North Central jumped out in front 8-6. Later in the second, Kobe Wherry would be on the receiving end of a touchdown this time around, and with a Mason Kunz 2-pt conversion, the Thunder would carry a 14-8 lead into the half. The Thunder were winning the battle upfront, subduing the Battlers potent rushing attack. However, those injuries would come back to snag the Thunder in the later parts of the game. Gettysburg relied on their air attack to stave off the rumbling Thunder and claw their way back out in front. In the third quarter, Jack Simon scampered in for a 15-yard score and two-point conversion that would give the Battlers a two-point advantage. Boston Brown and Treyson Zeigler collaborated for another Gettysburg score to make it 22-14 late in the game, forcing North Central to need a TD and two to tie. The Thunder would get that score with under two minutes left in regulation when Easton Kunz capped off a long drive with a five-yard rushing touchdown. However, the Battlers were able to deny the two-point conversion and escape with a victory moving to 1-0 on the year.
