INDIANAPOLIS (WRTV) A 35-year-old Indianapolis man was convicted Friday of murder for the July 2023 shooting death of his wife, the Marion County Prosecutor's Office said in a news release. After a two-day bench trial, Seth Smit
h-Robinson was found guilty of shooting 36-year-old Erica Pedroza multiple times inside their home. Her obituary said Pedroza "used her extensive knowledge and deeply caring personality to work in academic advising, minority health initiatives, and most recently promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts for Indianapolis businesses."At 7:30 a.m. July 22, 2023, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were called to a home in the 800 block of Orchard Grove Lane. At the time, the Damar Foundation, a disability services organization, owned the house in the Valley Ridge at Heartland Crossing neighborhood on the city's southwest side.Investigators found no evidence that anyone had broken into the home, and no one else was inside at the time.Police noted that crime rarely happens in that area and records showed officers had never been called to the home before the shooting.Smith-Robinson was arrested in November 2024 in Nashville, Tennessee, with help from the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force. He was held in a Nashville jail before extradition to Indiana.Following the arrest, the police department posted a message from investigators on social media: Detectives would like to thank the community for the information provided in this case. This is another example of how IMPDs enhanced collaboration with federal and local law enforcement partners continues to yield positive results for the Indianapolis community.IMPD announced July 24 that another man, Dalvin Carter, was being charged for his alleged role in the crime. His case is still pending. Detectives in 2025 received a tip that Pedrozas death may have been a murder-for-hire. IMPD says they reviewed old and new pieces of evidence, case files, and took multiple trips to speak with Carter, who is in an Arkansas prison. In May, Carter reportedly gave detectives the information they needed to present the case to the Marion County prosecutor. The prosecutor and IMPD have praised the community for bringing critical tips to them, leading to Smith-Robinson conviction and Carter's arrest.Smith-Robinson's sentencing was set for 2 p.m. Sept. 25 in Marion Superior Court 21.Carter's case, in the same court, has its next hearing set for Oct. 6. He faces a charge of murder, as well as top-level felony counts of robbery and burglary.
