Fond du Lac Big Brothers Big Sisters builds first of its kind sensory playground

At Big Brothers Big Bisters in Fond du Lac, big things are happening.The organization recently completed a roughly $100,000 dollar sensory playground called the Nucleus Strive.Board member Ryan Kamphuis says it's the only model
of its kind right now in the world.Kamphuis says the playground will be inclusive for kids of all ages."One of the things that we wanted in the playground was something that could spread some age in there as well," Kamphuis said. Fond du Lac Big Brothers Big Sisters builds first of its kind sensory playgroundWhich Kamphuis says is crucial for children who have disabilities."For us to be able to have it for our littles here is great," Kamphuis said.Local equipment supplier BCI Burke thats based in Fond du Lac designed the playground.Their director of engineering and product development Scott Liebelt says playgrounds can help enhance childhood development.And their goal is to make sure kids get the most from their equipment."We design it in, Liebelt said. "We do some research and we watch kids, we interview caregivers, teachers, medical providers."However, not everyone wants to be the center of attention.Liebelt says taking that into account for this design was key."Sometimes kids want to have a little area off to the side that they can regroup and gather themselves," Liebelt said. "And we provide those types of locations on the play area."Liebelt says the completion of this playground will allow them to bring this design to other places all around the country, and potentially across the world.
