CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Iryna Zarutska’s death is taking center stage in the US Senate race in North Carolina. While at the Charlotte Fraternal Order of Police lodge in east Charlotte on Friday, former Republican National Committee Chair Michael Whatley criticized former Governor Roy Cooper’s pol icies, which he says led to Zarutska’s death. Republican US Senate candidate Whatley says, “The fact is he (suspect Decarlos Brown) was re-arrested and re-released under the pretrial release and cashless bail programs that Roy Cooper put in place 13 additional times before he got on that light rail carrier and murdered Iryna Zarutska.” According to the latest High Point University poll released Friday morning, Cooper has a 5% lead over Whatley. ...read more read less
