INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Marion County prosecutors filed attempted murder charges against a 37-year-old man accused of shooting two Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers. Kreshaun Brinkley, who also sustained injuries in the shooting, left the hospital and is held at the Marion County jail. The incident unfolded around 2:30 p.m. Aug. 14 in the 300 block of North Fleming Street on the city’s west side. IMPD SWAT officers served a narcotics warrant at a home when Brinkley fired at officers as they exited their armored vehicle. Gunfire hit two officers, and IMPD officers returned fire, striking Brinkley at least once. The shootout lasted for at least an hour, prompting IMPD to issue a shelter-in-place order for the surrounding area. Brinkley finally surrendered around 3:15 p.m. and police took him into custody. By the end of the shootout, both sides had fired more than 200 rounds. Records from Marion Superior Court 31 show Brinkley faces three counts of attempted murder, five counts of unlawful possession of a gun by a serious violent felon, three counts of criminal recklessness, and one count of criminal vandalism. Brinkley is due in court Friday morning for a hearing. Criminal history Brinkley has a criminal history in Marion County, records show. In 2020, Marion County prosecutors charged him with unlawful possession by a serious violent felon and resisting law enforcement. However, prosecutors later dismissed the case due to insufficient evidence linking Brinkley to the gun. On Dec. 9, 2021, a court convicted Brinkley of resisting law enforcement. Court records show that on May 18, 2020, IMPD officers responded to Edgemont and Harding streets to investigate an armed person. Brinkley ran from police and ignored commands to “police stop,” court records said. Officers saw what they believed was a gun in the front of his waistband. At the time, Brinkley had an active warrant for violating community corrections issued on Jan. 20, 2020. Brinkley left community corrections before completing the intake process or receiving his electronic monitoring commitment. As part of his 2021 sentence for resisting law enforcement, the court seized Brinkley’s guns and ammunition and sentenced him to a year of probation.
