California has a lot of official “things”. The California redwood is the official tree, the poppy is the official flower, and the Garibaldi is the official marine state fish. And yet, we’ve never had an official bee, even though the Golden State has more bees than almost any other state. That’s where YOU come in. Out of 1,600 bee species that call California home, the California Native Bee Society picked 19 types and they’re asking the public to vote on the bee that they think best represents the state. The initiative is part of a statewide effort to find California’s official bee. You can browse the selection of bees and vote on the California Native Bee Society’s website here. If you’re planning to vote, be a busy bee about it, because voting closes Sept. 8! And if you’re curious about other official state symbols, click here.
