NEW CASTLE, Ind. (WRTV) -- Flood waters may have left New Castle, but their impacts are far outlasting their presence. As of Thursday, a stretch of Riley Road remains closed down after a part of it collapsed during last week's h istoric disaster, while crews could be seen at Foster's Landing Apartments cleaning out units throttled by the floods."You would think that while the rain's coming down, would be the most stressful," New Castle Mayor Greg York said. "But really, the most intense has been, how are we going to recover from this?"York said city crews evacuated 375 people during the floods, but many more than that have been left without a home."We have thousands of people that have lost furnaces, lost everything on the first floor, lost their hot water heater," he said. "So, I would say, a few thousand people, it has destroyed their homes."York said Foster's Landing was one of the hardest hit properties in the city, and every single one of the complex's residents had to be evacuated by boat."We (were) watching the water come up, it started coming from the corn field, and slowly it just worked its way up," said Damon Barker, a resident of the complex, who says he lost all of his personal belongings in the floods. "(First responders came) to the door, beat on the door. They said 'it's an emergency evacuation' and they had two kayaks. (They) pulled us all the way up to the very front of the apartments."While the community awaits possible federal government aid, several of the city's non-profits have banded together to deliver hygiene kits and buckets with cleaning supplies to flood victims."We held a meeting yesterday of all the nonprofits and agreed to all work together and coordinate for who needs what across the city," Reverend Michelle White of First United Methodist Church of New Castle said. "This is exactly what it is to be human and good. It's everything that we're supposed to do... I love that people are coming together and supporting each other despite this incredible loss." ...read more read less
