A grass fire scorched a field south of Alliance Airport in Haslet Thursday afternoon. Flames burned along Westport Parkway, near Intermodal Parkway and Interstate 35W. Firefighters shut down some lanes of traffic as they worked to contain the fire. Video from Texas Sky Ranger showed trucks pum ping water onto hot spots that were still smoldering. Fort Worth Fire Department crews also responded to assist Haslet firefighters. The Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office told NBC 5 that deputies were also on scene. The Sheriff’s Office told NBC 5 the fire was mostly out just before 4:30 p.m., and crews were remaining on scene to prevent flare-ups. At this point, it is not clear what sparked the fire. The National Weather Service says that with heat indices consistently in the 103-109 range and minimal precipitation expected, the current stretch of hot and dry weather may increase grass fire activity. ...read more read less
