FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Edge rusher Jonathan Greenard, the Eagles’ $98 million free agent signing, is in danger of missing the start of the regular season with the pectoral injury he suffered lifting weights before training camp began. That news was delivered by Eagles defensive coordinator Vic F angio Wednesday morning, a few minutes before the Eagles opened joint practices with the Patriots on the grass fields outside Gillette Stadium. Greenard has been on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list since camp began. PUP is for players who have injuries that pre-date the start of camp. Fangio simply answered, “Yeah,” when asked if he’s concerned that the 2024 Pro Bowler could miss the start of the season. The Eagles open the regular season in 25 days, Sept. 13, at the Linc against the Commanders. “I don’t know when Greenard will be back,” Fangio said. “You know, that injury he got in our weight room is going to take some time to heal.” Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman initially said the team wasn’t overly concerned with the injury. “This is not a long-term injury,” Roseman said back on July 30 as camp opened. “This is nothing we’re concerned about.” But Greenard has missed all of training camp and it now sounds like the injury could cut into Greenard’s first season with the Eagles. Greenard was the Eagles’ major offseason signing, inking a four-year, $98 million deal after recording 12-sack seasons with the Texans in 2023 and Vikings in 2024. He dropped to only three sacks last year. With Greenard sidelined, Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt are the top edge rushers, and A.J. Epenesa and A.K. Ebiketie have been the next two on the depth chart. Ebiketie played 22 snaps in the preseason opener and Epenesa played 20.  “I’m very happy with Nolan and Jalyx,” Fangio said. “A.K. is coming along, the other guys are coming along. But we need our third and fourth until Greenard gets back to really solidify their positions.” Other edge rushers on the roster include International Player Pathway signing Joshua Weru, rookie 7th-round pick Keyshawn James-Newby, 2023 Bucs 6th-round pick Joe Ramirez and 2021 Eagles 6th-round pick Tarron Jackson. ...read more read less
