INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Flash flooding returns as a primary threat to central Indiana Wednesday, with rain and storms capable of producing 1 to 3 inches of rainfall through tonight.
A slow-moving cold front and elevated moisture levels will trigger scat
tered to numerous showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. While the severe weather threat remains isolated, favorable wind shear could support organized multicell structures capable of damaging wind gusts or hail.
This morning:
Patchy fog will reduce visibility across rural areas of central Indiana, especially outside the Indianapolis metro . Expect low visibility conditions through mid morning before fog lifts.
Today:
A slow-moving cold front will bring scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms to central Indiana, this afternoon.
Storms are expected to produce rainfall totals ranging from 1 to 3 inches. The setup favors development of training storms—repeated waves of precipitation moving over the same locations—which may result in localized flash flooding, particularly in areas where the ground remains saturated from recent rain.
There is also an isolated severe weather threat. Damaging winds and large hail will be the primary threats with any strong storm.
Temperatures today will peak from the upper 70s to low 80s, remaining below seasonal averages.
Tonight:
Showers and thunderstorms will continue into the evening hours before gradually tapering off near Midnight.
Overnight lows will settle in the mid-60s.
Thursday and Friday:
High pressure will build over the region, leading to drier conditions and a decrease in storm chances. Expect mostly clear skies and temperatures remaining slightly below seasonal norms.
Another chance for rain arrives late Friday into Saturday as a weak system approaches from the west.
7-day forecast:
Look for drier weather to settle in for Thursday and most of Friday before rain chances return late Friday night into Saturday. Temperatures will remain near or slightly below seasonal averages through the weekend, with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s.
