INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — More than 87,000 people are still without power in northwestern Indiana now a full week after disastrous storms moved through the Hoosier State. Northern Indiana Public Service Company, or NIPSCO, reported Tuesday that 81% of power had been restored throughout the ent ire Region, though there was still work to be done. Of the estimated 87,300 still in the dark Wednesday morning, around 73,000 of those were in northern Lake County. Neighboring Porter County reported just under 9,000 were without electricity. Fourteen hundred people were still waiting for service to be restored in LaPorte County, according to a U.S. power outage map. Gary Mayor Eddie Melton said Tuesday afternoon NIPSCO was actively working in the area, though did not provide a specific number of how many residents were without power. “I know our residents are frustrated and exhausted, and we understand how difficult this can be during this time frame,” he said. “The City of Gary will continue working closely with NIPSCO, and our emergency responders are working, as well.” Watch the full update from Mayor Melton here. In Hammond, where around 8,000 people were without power on Wednesday, Mayor Thomas McDermott says members of his community are “understandably frustrated and impatient.” As of 3 p.m. Tuesday, NIPSCO said more than 2,300 lineworkers and mutual aid workers and over 120 vegetation management crews were actively involved in recovery efforts in Hammond. An estimated time of full restoration was expected to be announced “very soon.” “Restoring electrical service is NIPSCO’s responsibility, and we will continue pressing for Hammond residents to be restored as quickly and safely as possible,” McDermott emphasized. “I know that’s little consolation to those entering their eighth day without electricity. I share your frustration.” “We will continue to pass along information from NIPSCO as we receive it and keep the pressure on until that 7,928 reaches ZERO,” he said.
