Young students proudly displays her new bookbag. Miami-Dade County School Board member Mary Blanco hosted a successful Back-to-School Bookbag Drive on Thursday, July 23, at South Dade Senior High School. The event brought together community partners, elected officials, and volunteers to help prepare local students across the South Dade area for a successful upcoming school year. During the drive, 500 bookbags packed with essential school supplies were distributed to area students to ensure they start the school year ready to succeed. In addition to receiving supplies, students had the opportunity to receive complimentary haircuts courtesy of the Miami Barber Institute. Blanco extended a special thank you to Florida State Sen. Alexis Calatayud for her involvement and ongoing support of the event. The event’’ success was made possible through generous contributions from sponsors including The Christmas Smiles Project, Herff Jones, The Children’s Trust, and The Education Fund. Additionally, numerous community partners were in attendance to provide valuable resources and outreach services to families, including the Miami-Dade Public Library System, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) Parent Academy, Project Up-Start, and the M-DCPS Title I Migrant Education Program. “It was wonderful to see our students receiving new bookbags filled with school supplies to help them start the school year ready for success,” Blanco said. “I was thrilled to give away 500 bookbags to students across the South Dade area, and I am deeply grateful to all of our sponsors, community partners, and volunteers who made this event possible.” Blanco also expressed her gratitude to South Dade Senior High School for hosting the drive, extending special recognition to principal Jonathan Britton, activities director Tanya Rae, and the entire administrative team for their leadership and support in making the event a success.       ABOUT US: For more Miami community news, look no further than Miami Community Newspapers.
