Oliver Gilbert advances to general election for open District 24 seat, will face GOP Te Brown
Aug 18, 2026
Miami-Dade County Commissioner Oliver Gilbert has won the Democratic nomination for the redrawn District 24 seat previously held by U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson.
Gilbert, who had Wilson’s endorsement, defeated six other Democrats who were vying for the seat. He got 34% of the vote in Tuesday nig
ht’s election.
The seat opened earlier this year after Wilson announced her retirement after serving decades in Congress.
Speaking to 7News during the primary race, Gilbert pointed to his track record as Miami Gardens mayor and then as county commissioner.
On Tuesday, in front of a room filled with cheerful supporters, he said he wants to talk about his history, reinstating legal protections for Haitians and about moving the country forward.
“First, our congresswoman decided she wasn’t going to run so she is one of my heroes. She’s amazing. I understand where we are as a country and what we need and that’s from international to locally, nationally. We need folks who want to solve problems. I’m happy to have our mayor, early supporter, we want to solve problems for Americans, not just people in this district, but everybody,” he said.
District 24 was significantly shifted after the Florida legislature redrew its districts, moving its boundaries farther north into Broward County and stretching down into Miami-Dade County to include part of Miami and all of Miami Gardens.
Gilbert will face Republican Te Brown and two non-partisan candidates in the November general election.
