Park City considers oneway Main Street route
Aug 18, 2026
Mayor Ryan Dickey and the Park City Council on Thursday are scheduled to discuss a range of possible improvements in the Main Street core.
One of the concepts involves turning Main Street into a one-way route in the northbound, or downhill, direction for private vehicles. That concept calls for
one travel lane for private vehicles and another one for transit. The transit lane would allow travel in both directions.
There would be parking on the side of the travel lane for private vehicles and what officials are calling pedestrian zones on both sides of the street. Benches, public art and large potted plants would be designed to increase the safety of pedestrians. Improvements to Swede Alley are also a possibility, but two-way traffic would remain. The elected officials at the meeting could also address the potential of aerial transit.
Park City leaders are continuing discussions about the future of the Main Street in an effort to ensure the shopping, dining and entertainment strip remains competitive against other commercial destinations in the Wasatch Back. A conceptual Main Street plan was crafted that envisions numerous improvements.
“These concepts reflect feasibility work that council directed following its decision not to adopt the full Main Street Area Plan in December 2024. Rather than advancing the broader plan, council asked staff to further evaluate specific elements, including Main Street and Swede Alley street and sidewalk improvements and aerial transit options. Staff is now returning with that work, updated cost and visitation information, and specific questions for council about what — if anything — should advance and whether these individual efforts should be considered together as part of a coordinated Main Street investment strategy. This item is not scheduled for action,” said Clayton Scrivner, the communications director for the municipal government.
The meeting is scheduled to start at 3:45 p.m. Thursday at the Marsac Building and will be broadcast online on the municipal website, parkcity.gov.
