As costs for everything from groceries and child care to housing and gas continue to rise, a Dallas nonprofit says single mothers are feeling the brunt of it. Interfaith Family Services provides transitional housing for homeless families and offers rent assistance to help them stay in their homes . The group primarily serves single mothers who are facing homelessness or at risk of becoming unhoused because of a job loss, divorce, or illness. “The number of homeless families in the area continues to increase year after year, and particularly when it comes to working-class single moms whose wages don’t always match the rising cost of rent, child care, and groceries. So a lot of these families are just one paycheck away from homelessness, and when a disaster strikes, they find themselves in need of rent assistance or, at worst, a place to live,” said Kimberly Williams, CEO of Interfaith Family Services. They also offer a child care center, Hope and Horizons. The after-school program offers snacks, tutoring, activities, and even dinner for kids. All the different services they offer are funded by donations and grants. “Our biggest program that it impacts is our rent assistance program and our transitional housing program. And “Just recently, we had a mother graduate from our program who became homeless after having a divorce and then shortly thereafter, she lost her job. And then, after that, the house that she was living in, they decided to sell it. She was renting it. So she just had a terrible series of months and she and her three kids found themselves homeless. But they were able to come to Interfaith to get a fully furnished apartment, get free after-school care until she was able to get back on her feet and get a job through our career training program. She since exited with over $6,000 in savings,” said Williams. Williams said their second-largest donation driver is North Texas Giving Day, held annually by the Communities Foundation of Texas. North Texas Giving Day is in September. The fundraiser is one of the largest in the region and helps thousands of nonprofits across the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. More than 3,200 nonprofits participate in the community-wide event that has been held for the last 17 years. In 2025, the community helped raise a total of $78 million for nonprofits. “So it provides a considerable amount of funding that goes directly this year to our rent assistance program. So as people give on North Texas Giving Day, we’re able to keep people in their homes because those people cared enough to give the Interfaith Family Services,” said Williams. North Texas Giving Day is Sept. 17, but giving opens on Aug. 27. ...read more read less
