The Jeremy Ranch Stone Cabin has been officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service, effective Aug. 3, recognizing it as a significant landmark in Utah’s agricultural history. The Jeremy Ranch Stone Cabin was built around 1890 on the original Jer emy Ranch and served for decades as a seasonal shelter for ranch hands managing the Jeremy family’s large sheep herds in East Canyon. Constructed from locally sourced sandstone using pioneer-era craftsmanship, the cabin is the only surviving structure associated with Jeremy Ranch and represents more than 70 years of sheep ranching history, according to Summit County.  The cabin and surrounding land have changed hands over the decades, with the property most recently acquired by the county and placed under conservation easement to permanently protect the 910 Ranch. The property was listed in recognition of both its historical association with Utah’s sheep industry and its potential to yield important historical information about life at a 19th-century sheep camp. “This cabin is a rare and tangible connection to the Snyderville Basin’s agricultural heritage, and we are committed to preserving it for future generations,” said Jess Kirby, director of lands and natural resources. The path to National Register listing was made possible in part through a 2024 grant from the Utah State Historic Preservation Office, which funded archaeological surveys across the 910 Ranch. That work revealed historic artifacts and buried subsurface anomalies that strengthened the case for the cabin’s archaeological significance and supported the nomination. Summit County said it is actively working to restore the structure and make it structurally sound. National Register listing opens the door to additional preservation grant funding, which the county will pursue as part of its restoration strategy. Looking ahead, Summit County hopes to incorporate the cabin into a future trail system, allowing visitors to experience this landmark as part of an authentic ranching landscape that has changed little since the Jeremy family first grazed their sheep here. Those interested in learning more can stop by the interpretive sign along East Canyon Road to read about the cabin’s history and the Jeremy family’s legacy. A newsletter with restoration updates and event announcements, including opportunities to see the cabin up close, is available at summitcounty.info/countylandsnews. The 910 Ranch is located on both sides of East Canyon Road in the Snyderville Basin approximately 10 miles northwest of Park City. Summit County’s Department of Lands and Natural Resources manages the property as a permanently protected open space.
