Aug 17, 2026
A Richland Hills Police Officer shot someone Sunday afternoon during what police are calling a family disturbance.
NBC 5 is working to learn if the person shot was armed at the time, what their condition is, and what led up to the shooting.
Police released very few details last night.
Polic
e did confirm the person is in custody and was hospitalized after being shot with “non-life-threatening injuries following a family disturbance at a residence.”
The incident happened Sunday, Aug. 16, around 2:30 p.m. Police said an adult male and his adult son were involved in the disturbance on Allena Lane.
North Richland Hills police assisted in the call.
Police said they were speaking with the victim outside the home while the suspect was inside when they learned of alleged physical violence between the victim and the suspect and that there were weapons at the home.
Officers said while gathering information, the suspect exited the home, began yelling, and charged at them. Police said they told the suspect to stop, but the suspect did not, and a Richland Hills police officer shot him. It’s unclear if the father or son is the suspect, but they are expected to survive their injuries and remain in police custody.
The victim is also expected to survive.
No more civilians or officers were hurt.
The Texas Rangers are investigating. The officer is on leave, which is standard policy.
Richland Hills police said the suspect is under investigation for the family disturbance and said the suspect committed “family violence assault with bodily injury.” The suspect also has an additional pending charge for Aggravated Assault on a peace officer, a second-degree felony. The suspect’s name will not be made available until the suspect has been formally charged and seen by a Magistrate judge sometime Monday, Aug. 17.
