MADISON TOWNSHIP, Ind. (WRTV) The Madison Township Fire Department said firefighters rescued 10 people and several pets Sunday evening after rising floodwaters trapped people in the area of Smokey Row Road, and State Road 144 a
nd Centenary Road and Centenary Lane.Emergency crews were dispatched shortly before 8:00 p.m. in response to reports of multiple people needing to be rescued from their homes due to rising floodwaters. Crews said several pets were also evacuated.The Madison Township Fire Department posted on Facebook and clarified that the flooding was caused by a failed quarry levee that directed water into a quarry, confirming that no river levee had broken.Flooding damaged local infrastructure, washing away a portion of Smokey Row Road. The fire department reported that the full extent of damage to homes, roadways and property across the affected area will remain unknown until floodwaters recede.Firefighters posted "This remains an active and potentially dangerous situation." In addition to home evacuations, first responders said they carried out water rescues of drivers who tried to drive through flooded roads and became trapped in their vehicles. The Madison Township Fire Department is warning people to stay off flooded roadways and stay cautious. The post said, If you encounter water over the roadway, TURN AROUND.First responders are also reminding people that water can conceal severe damage or a completely washed-away road surface. According to the Morgan County EMA the following roads are closed: Big Hurricane Rd in the 5900 block Paragon Rd Gray Rd Blue Bluff Rd flood Waverly Park Rd and Smokey Row Rd Centenary Rd in the area of Centenary Ln
