Aug 17, 2026
A 33-year-old woman was shot in the back and killed as she stood on a packed Brooklyn sidewalk early Sunday, while a man was wounded, police say.
Authorities are looking into whether both may have been unintended targets. The man is expected to be OK.
Jarring surveillance footage shows the b
lock, Bergen Street and Howard Avenue in Crown Heights, flooded with people around 2 a.m. Suddenly, people start to run from the intersection, some of them screaming.
Shots are heard. More screaming.
In the chaos, police say the woman and a 34-year-old man were shot — him in the stomach, her in the back.
Authorities say the victims were part of a larger group when an argument broke out. The gunfire came right after. A witness said there had been a block party, and at least 100 people were in the area at the time.
The dead woman has been identified as Sofronie Hartzog, of Brooklyn.
The NYPD is searching for two suspects in the case. No arrests have been made.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
