Ravenswood residents clean up damage after devastating flood

RAVENSWOOD, Ind. (WRTV) -- Some streets remain closed as residents in Ravenswood return home to devastating damage after several feet of water flooded homes Saturday.David Bartrom, who has lived in his home for more than 30 year
s, said he's never experienced flooding like this.He said from about 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday, his home flooded with water from Ravenswood Lake and the White River.Inside, the damage is extensive. Water rose at least three feet, lifting Bartrom's refrigerator and slamming it to the ground. Heavy dressers, a washer, and dryer were also knocked over.His bed and mattress remain soaked, and water is still standing in parts of his home. Years of memories washed away.Bartrom says the damage is especially difficult because his daughter is getting married this Saturday. Some of her wedding flower decor is floating in water."We were able to salvage most of those," Bartrom said. "But yeah, it's been a rough day. Just knowing it was okay, that was probably my biggest concern." He choked up just thinking about it.Despite losing belongings, Bartrom said he's trying to keep things in perspective."There's nothing. It's just possessions. I have my dog, my cat, my family. I have a wedding to look forward to," he said.Bartrom is grateful his family is safe and that he has insurance. He said he plans to rebuild because he loves his community.Outside his home, neighbors are making the best of the situation. Two canoed through the flooded street to chat with Bartrom. For many Ravenswood residents, the cleanup and recovery are just beginning.The Marion County Emergency Management Agency is warning Ravenswood residents not to return to flooded homes or homes with structural damage. Officials say floodwaters are expected to continue decreasing through Tuesday.Bartrom and his family have evacuated and are currently staying with his sister.
