CUMBERLAND, Ind. (WISH) — A Cumberland police officer and his patrol dog were injured in a crash after a suspected drunk driver going the wrong way on a one-way street ran a red light early Saturday morning in downtown Indianapolis. A Facebook post with information on the crash did not say what time it happened. The officer was driving on East Washington Street, returning to Cumberland after dropping off evidence from an earlier arrest involving a man found with a firearm. A vehicle traveling the wrong way on College Avenue ran a red light and hit the rear driver’s side of the officer’s patrol car. The impact caused the airbags to deploy. The officer, the police dog, and the other driver sustained minor injuries. Medics treated and released the officer at the scene, while the dog was taken to a local emergency veterinary clinic for an evaluation. The post did not name the people in the crash or say what type of vehicle the man was driving. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers investigated the crash and determined the other driver may have been drinking. Police arrested the driver on a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a blood alcohol content above 0.15%. Indiana’s threshold for driving drunk is 0.08%. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will determine whether to file charges against the man. Following department policy, the Cumberland officer took a breath test, which showed he had no alcohol in his system.
