The Timber Fire near Big Sur continues to grow and had spread to 4,545 acres as of Friday morning while firefighters continue to battle the massive blaze amid tough conditions, according to Cal Fire. The wildfire remains 7% contained, Cal Fire said in an update around 6:35 a.m. The fire has pr ompted evacuations and the closure of a stretch of state Highway 1 in Monterey County, from mile marker 45.1 near Big Sur Bakery to mile marker 37 at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park Vista Point. The fire has crossed Longwood Creek and reached Olmstead Mountain, according to authorities. There have been no reported injuries as of Friday morning, but more than 500 structures are threatened, according to Cal Fire. A heavy marine layer has helped slow the fire’s spread, while crews continue building containment lines behind homes on the east side of the freeway. They have faced difficult conditions in steep drainages, and fog has severely limited aircraft support, according to Cal Fire. All evacuation orders and warnings remain in place. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office issued orders for zones MRY-F023, MRY-F025, MRY-F026, MRY-F027 and MRY-F028-A, and warnings for zones MRY-F021-B, MRY-F022, MRY-F024, MRY-F028-B and MRY-F029. An emergency evacuation shelter remains open at Carmel Middle School, 4380 Carmel Valley Road in Carmel.
