There’s a very tiny new member of the Elmwood Park Zoo family! This week, the zoo’s Reeves’s muntjac, Violet, gave birth to a baby boy weighing 980 grams — just over 2 pounds. Zoo staff said both mom and baby are doing great. The baby boy received his first exam within 24 hours of bein g born and was given a clean bill of health. Officials said this birth also marked a special milestone for Violet. As an AZA-accredited facility, Elmwood Park Zoo participates in the Species Survival Plan (SSP), which helps manage healthy, genetically diverse populations of animals in human care. Zoo officials said Violet and the baby’s father, Colby, have played their part in that important work, and this will be Violet’s final offspring. Violet and Colby are now living separately at the zoo. The best part? Staff said visitors won’t have to wait to catch a glimpse of the cute baby boy. Violet and her baby are already out on exhibit along the zoo’s main path. “Stop by this weekend and say hello to our newest (and tiniest) resident!” the zoo wrote in a news release. Elmwood Park Zoo is located at 1661 Harding Boulevard in Norristown, Pennsylvania. For hours and ticket information go to this website. ...read more read less
