A fire that burned through homes in Suisun City on Thursday displaced several families with children, according to Mayor Alma Hernandez. Suisun City Fire Department crews arrived early Thursday morning at the 600 block of School Street on the west side of the city, where multiple structures were burning, according to a statement from the department. Roughly 10 individuals, including toddlers, were displaced in the blaze, said Hernandez, who was at the scene for several hours after the fire started. There were no injuries, she said. Hernandez noted that wind was a factor in the quick spread of the fire, which she estimated burned through “four or five residences.” “Suisun City is known for its ‘west wind’ — that’s what Suisun means,” said Hernandez in a phone call, referring to the local indigenous Patwin origins of the city’s name. The American Red Cross, which provides housing assistance, food, and financial relief for victims of fires, arrived at the scene around 2 a.m., and is currently helping to place those affected into temporary housing and hotels, according to Hernandez. Some of the displaced individuals have opted to stay with family nearby until a long-term option becomes available.
