A preliminary 3.8 magnitude earthquake struck near San Leandro, according to the United States Geological Survey. The quake hit at 8:30 a.m. and was centered 2.4 miles north of San Leandro, the USGS said. The initial quake was followed by preliminary 3.0- and 2.8-magnitude aftershocks at about 9:07 a.m., according to the USGS. Following the initial earthquake, BART temporarily held trains before allowing them to run at reduced speeds while crews completed safety inspections of the tracks. Normal BART service has since resumed, but the agency said there are major residual delays systemwide. No damage was reported. This is a developing story.
