San Jose State students get unlimited Bay Area transit with Clipper BayPass
Aug 13, 2026
Getting to campus, internships and jobs is about to become more affordable for San Jose State University students, with unlimited transit rides across the Bay Area beginning Saturday.
Students began signing up Thursday for the Clipper BayPass, which gives them access to VTA, BART, AC Transit and
Caltrain, as well as participating rail and ferry services.
University and transit leaders said the program is aimed at increasing transportation equity for San Jose State’s 32,000 students while opening up more internship and employment opportunities and giving students a chance to explore all nine Bay Area counties.
“Internships these days are income, and that income is experience,” Associated Students President Ma’Kayla Akin said, adding that the program could help students gain experience before entering the workforce.
The Clipper BayPass is available to full- and part-time students and is valid throughout the nine-county Bay Area.
While students will not pay for individual rides through the program, they agreed to contribute about $49 per year in student fees toward it.
University leaders said they will work to build support and increase enrollment and usage as they consider the program’s future and the possibility of expanding it.
