A large police presence could be seen in Wilmington, Delaware, after at least four people were shot in an incident that happened on Tuesday morning. At the scene, at about 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, officers could be seen investigating the area and blocking off the roadway at the intersection of East 10th and North Spruce streets in Wilmington, Delaware. In a radio call that went out at about 5:52 a.m., police reported initially that at least three people had been shot at that intersection. A radio call shortly after the first reported a fourth victim had been injured in this incident. Who was injured in this shooting? In a morning update, police said the situation unfolded at about 6:11 a.m. when four people were injured in the shooting. Officials said the injured individuals were: A 23-year-old man A 40-year-old man A 49-year-old man A 53-year-old woman While officials didn’t immediately detail more information about these individuals’ injuries, they said all of the victims were hospitalized in stable condition following the shooting. One of the victims, identified as Gloria King, told NBC10 she was walking down the sidewalk and asked someone she knew for a cigarette when she noticed a car stop at the traffic light next to her. “Before they could really pull off through the light, they just started shooting and I went to the ground,” she said. “I could already feel that I go hit.” King — who was shot in the lower buttocks — had a message for the shooter. “Put the guns down,” she said. “They kill.” While police have not determined if the victims were the intended targets of the shooters, King believes she was at the wrong place at the wrong time. “I was scared just to die because there were just so many shots,” she said. “I could see the sparks coming off the sidewalk. It was very scary.” Officials have not yet provided further details on any suspects in this shooting or explain what may have sparked this shooting. No arrests were immediately announced. The shooting happened across the street from Sacred Heart Village II, a senior living facility. Property manager Cheryl Elzey told NBC10’s Lili Zheng that she heard about the gunshots Tuesday morning. “This morning, I’m sitting at the chair and pop, pop, pop, pop, pop. Like 10 times. I told the guard, ‘It’s gunfire’. By the time we got out, the victim was already sitting on the step yelling ‘I’m hit!’” Elzey recalled. “This is not the first time. Not by a long shot.” Elzey said her facility houses residents between the ages of 62 and 80. Residents in the senior living facility have concerns about leaving their homes, she told NBC10. It’s unclear whether the shooting happened inside a building or outside, but a property sits on the intersection where police said they responded. And, according to Elzey, that corner property has been an issue. ‘It’s an active drug house’ District 3 Councilwoman Zanthia Oliver has concerns with the property at the center of this incident, as well. “It’s an active drug house,” Councilwoman Oliver said. “No, it’s no secret. Whenever you see trash, windows open, you know. There’s something going on. I know. I’ve reported it. It’s on paper at the meetings. The people who live here, the minister here, Brother Ron…he spent millions of dollars to fix this building [Sacred Heart Village II] for seniors. Seniors should not have to live like this.” Oliver said she wants Wilmington’s Licenses and Inspection to review the property and to see more police presence on the block. “That’s why we have LI. We have land use. It’s closed on the book. You can look at it again and see there’s something going on over there. You see windows up. It’s a mess. It’s been reported. They need to come out and do their job. It’s called inspection,” Oliver said, when asked what the city can do. “I’m just frustrated. As council, we have spent a lot of money into housing around here. It’s getting a lot better, but it’s getting things like this that make people don’t want to move into neighborhoods. It’s a blighted building. We shouldn’t be having these issues.” NBC10 reached out to Wilmington police Tuesday for data on crime reported at the intersection of 10th and Spruce streets at the property in question. In an email, a spokesperson said there did not appear to be any calls in the past week but they are reviewing their other systems to see if there are other records from further back. NBC10 has also contacted Wilmington officials in the hope of reaching LI for comment on property complaints.
