Residents in Malvern, Chester County, have reported seeing foxes with mange, prompting reminders to keep a safe distance from the animals. Mange is a contagious but treatable skin condition caused by mites. Foxes affected by the condition may have patchy fur or scabby skin and can appear thin or lethargic. Officials said residents should not feed foxes because doing so can draw the animals closer to homes and potentially spread disease. People should also not attempt to handle or treat a fox themselves; doing so is illegal without a permit. Pets and trash should be kept secured, according to officials. Foxes with strong immune systems reportedly may naturally recover from mange if the infection is not too severe. Giving the animals space can help them recover.
