An off-duty Philadelphia police officer fired shots at car thieves, including the brother of a suspect in the murder of a Penn State student, officials told NBC10.

The officer then used another vehicle to follow the suspects in the stolen Charger, investigators said. The officer then confronted the suspects on the 2900 block of South 70th Street. This led to a shootout between the officer and one of the suspects, investigators said.
As the shooting continued, at least two of the suspects were spotted running towards a red Lexus, according to police. The Lexus then fled at a high rate of speed, investigators said. Other officers who were in the area pursued the suspects but lost sight of the Lexus near 63rd Street and Lindbergh Boulevard.
Police don’t believe anyone was struck during the shootout. They recovered the stolen Dodge Charger which had a broken rear passenger-side window and damage to its steering column. They also recovered several 9mm fired cartridge casings.
Police also later recovered the red Lexus which was unoccupied on the 4800 block of Merion Street. Investigators said the Lexus – which was bearing a New York registration – had been stolen from the 1600 block of Ogden Street on Sunday, Aug. 9.
Investigators determined the suspects had abandoned the red Lexus and entered another stolen vehicle, a blue Lexus with the Pennsylvania registration MVX-2059. The blue Lexus had been reported stolen on Aug. 9 from the area of 33rd and Cumberland streets. Police continue to search for that vehicle.
Monday afternoon, the U.S. Marshals released a photo of 19-year-old Khadfi Fleming, who they identified as a person of interest in the theft of the off-duty officer’s vehicle. They also said Fleming was wanted for robbery.
