The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the New York City metro area and the entire state of New Jersey through Monday evening, with isolated strong storms possible as the atmosphere over the tri-state area remains unstable. As of 3 p.m. a line of strong to sev ere storms was marching through Central Pennsylvania.  At its current pace of 35 mph, it will be on the city’s doorstep by 6:30 pm. Damaging straight-line wind is the main threat from these storms, followed by isolated flooding and hail. The greatest risk for severe storms will be south and west of New York City, through New Jersey into the Catskills and Poconos.  As storms track eastward late in the day, they will begin to lose their punch. Showers and storms could coincide with the evening commute Monday. Fortunately, the potential for severe weather is low, so we expect only isolated problems. Some downpours will produce heavy rain, which could lead to ponding or minor flooding on area roads.  But, again, the threat level for flash flooding today remains low, as widespread severe weather is unlikely.
