Several neighbors are fed up with the rowdiness they said is coming from Park and Rec, a bar in University Heights. Many of them told NBC 7 the rowdiness appears to have worsened just the last few months. They said their concern is not simply the noise, but the safety of the community. “I t’s annoying,” Nikki Tolliver said. Nikki Tolliver said she and many of her long-time neighbors describe feeling about the noise levels coming from Park and Rec, late into the night. “During the week they’ll have live music and even though I’m a block away, we hear the bass. The pounding all night long,” Nikki Tolliver said. The bar is situated on Park Boulevard in University Heights. It’s a popular nightlife destination that has been around for more than ten years, but neighbors said in recent months, the noise levels and activity at night have been getting out of hand. “It’s also been turning into a little bit more of a dangerous atmosphere, I’ve been woken up in the middle of the night with people stumbling out on the street, 200-300 people at a time and then someone doing doughnuts on the street with all of these intoxicated people now on the street with them,” said Devon Tolliver, another neighbor . “At 2 a.m., we hear engines racing, squealing their tires, and rattling motorcycles. It’s very disturbing,” another member of the community who asked not to be named said. Some neighbors said they’ve tried addressing the issue with the bar owners and even called police, but they have not been able to reach them. Chad Owen told NBC 7 he currently oversees Park and Rec and that he’s been talking with neighbors to address their concerns. In a statement he wrote, “I prefer to handle this with them rather than go on the public record with promises. I’ll let my actions over the next few months and neighbors’ opinions speak for themselves. Meanwhile, neighbors like Devon said those changes are not coming soon enough. “I’d like them to do more to get the crowd to be less chaotic, less rowdy. It’s not that I want Park and Rec to shut down. I just want them to do something that’s making the neighborhood feel safe again,” Devon Tolliver said. “I would really like them to curtail it, to do something, to have respect for us as neighbors,” Nikki Tolliver said. ...read more read less
