INDIANAPOLIS (WRTV) Indiana State Fair staff say safety remains their top priority.We are taking all precautions seriously, Leroy Lewis III, a fair spokesperson said. We want to make sure all our guests feel safe.Amazingly safe , Rainy Pickering, a fair employee for more than 10 years said. There are street closure officers, state troopers, IMPD, and bomb-sniffing dogs. I have no concerns.Lewis declined to comment on the stabbing that took place at the fairgrounds Saturday night while Indiana State Police investigate. However, he assured guests that the fairgrounds, located at 1202 E. 38th Street, remain safe for families.Safety rules include ID checks at all entrances for unaccompanied minors. Visitors under 18 must be with an adult 25 or older after 4 p.m. on Fridays and weekends, and after 6 p.m. on weekdays.17-year-old Max Richardson supports the chaperone requirement.Some people have different maturity levels, so the rule helps, Richardson said.State police staff checkpoints to ensure guests follow fair rules. Metal detectors are at every entrance, and weapons like knives and firearms are banned.I'm from Indiana, said guest Micah Church. A gun presence here sounds safe. In the city, not so much. Here, it makes me feel better because some people might want to cause harm.The fair also enforces a bag policy, limiting sizes to 9 by 10 by 12 inches. Diaper bags are permitted, but coolers are prohibited.State police and fair security monitor the area, with some officers working in plainclothes.Safety is the priority here at the Indiana State Fair, Lewis said.
