The driver of a USPS mail truck has been arrested in a deadly hit-and-run crash in Hell’s Kitchen, as the search for a driver in a unrelated Bronx crash continued Sunday evening. The New York City Police Dept. said Sunday that James Simmons, 61, was taken into custody and booked for leaving the scene of an accident. A 66-year-old man was crossing 9th Ave. and 55th St. at around 5:30 AM Saturday was hit by what police describe as a 2019 U.S. Postal Service box truck, traveling southbound on 9th Ave. The victim, whose name has not officially been released, was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. “We are deeply saddened to hear of this accident,” USPS spokesperson Xavier Hernandez said in a statement Saturday night. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the deceased. The Postal Service is cooperating fully with law enforcement on the investigation.” “Hit and run drivers. That’s immoral,” Jim Marte of Hell’s Kitchen said while standing near the scene of the collision. “It’s pretty dangerous. But I mean anyone who hits someone and doesn’t take care of it, it’s really pretty awful.” “That’s crazy, that’s so sad,” neighbor Alfredo Pidgon added, pointing to what he described as dangerous driving. “There’s a lot of irresponsible people around, so, you know, like crazy drivers.” Meanwhile, in The Bronx, the NYPD said a man was struck by a white BMW SUV near College Ave. and 166th St.around 4:00 AM Saturday. Police said the man at that scene was lying unconscious on the roadway following some sort of fight when the SUV hit him. The driver left the scene. Authorities say it’s not clear whether the driver was involved in the fight. Police also disclosed that about 10 minutes after the first incident, an NYPD car struck the man as he remained on the ground. The department says the officer rendered aid.
