Aug 09, 2026
Irving Police Department is reminding drivers that using hand-held cellphones in active school zones is prohibited ahead of the new school year.
Authorities said the ban applies to not only hand-held cellphones but other electronic communication devices as well.
“Motorists cannot engage in c
alls by talking, dialing or listening on a hand-held mobile device, nor can they enter or read text or email messages,” Irving police said in a statement.
Hands-free devices are permitted in school zones, according to Irving Police.
Irving police also released reminders and tips for drivers, parents, and students alongside the phone ban reminder:
Drivers
Stay alert and minimize distractions near schools.
Stop for school buses when red lights are flashing or the stop-arm is extended.
Always obey posted school zone speed limits.
Yield to crossing guards and pedestrians in crosswalks.
Parents and students:
Remind children to use sidewalks and to cross only at designated crosswalks.
Students should make eye contact with drivers before crossing and never assume vehicles will stop.
Walkers, bikers and bus riders should arrive early to avoid rushing.
School zone times are clearly marked on street signs and may vary by campus start and dismissal schedules
Those caught in violation of the ban may receive fines, as violations are considered a Class C misdemeanor. An exception is made to the ban during emergencies involving fire, police, or ambulance services.
